Competition entry for Competition concept for the Pediatric and Oncological Physiotherapy Center in Katowice Ligota

The concept was awarded in the competition for a multi-family residential building with reduced energy consumption.

The competition concept, which won an equal distinction in the architectural competition organized by SARP Katowice. The main assumption of the concept was to refer to local conditions – the shape of the investment area, the existing technical infrastructure and the ecosystem and woodland. The vicinity of the Ślepiotka River means that part of the investment area is intended for isolating and protective greenery, with an area of shallow groundwater, which is why the concept assumes minimizing construction interference in this area and maintaining and supporting the current ecosystem. The next aspect is the location of the sanitary collector, the relocation of which would generate a number of costs and technical problems with marking its new route. Maintaining its location and the technical zone with a width of 8m has a real impact on the shape of the designed building and brought savings in the estimated amount of approx. PLN 1 million gross. As a result of these decisions, a simple, triangular, three-storey block was created. Marked by fictitious, “invisible” lines – the characteristic, triangular shape of the plot or the sewage system thread, which is located several meters underground – one could say that this is architecture that does not correlate with the tangible surroundings. It is the opposite – the northern elevation is parallel to the planned public road and is the entrance zone of the building, and the south-western elevation, through a characteristic cut, opens to the forest and the river, which has a similar course to the sewage system in this area. In a simple block, in a plan similar to a triangle, an internal patio was carved out, which provides direct contact with the surroundings of the general communication in the building. The building does not have a first floor on the river side, which is why the patio is connected to the area designated for recreation, thematic gardens and greenery. The patio makes nature enter the building and fill it.
